Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Pathway

The Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation program Introduces students to the roles of various disciplines within sports medicine and rehabilitation sciences as well as other allied health professions. Students will be introduced to the analysis of human movement based on anatomical and mechanical principles. Emphasis is placed on the anatomy and physiology of the muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems and their interaction in human movement and athletic performance. They will also learn signs and symptoms of injuries, illnesses, and disorders commonly seen in the physically active population. Students will develop skills in injury prevention, injury and illness assessment, and using appropriate terminology and medical documentation to record injury and illness.

The Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation instructional program prepares students for entry-level employment, further training, and/or post-secondary education for these and other occupations: Personal Trainer, Athletic Trainer Aide, Physical Therapy Aide, Patient Transport Assistant, and Caregiver. Students develop leadership, social, civic, and career skills through participation in the Career and Technical Student Organization HOSA (Future Health Professionals). 

Sports Medicine This course is designed for students interested in learning how to prevent, assess, and manage athletic injuries. Students interested in pursuing a career such as athletic trainer, physical therapist, nurse, EMT, fireman, police officer, coach, personal trainer or any other sport or medical related field would benefit from the knowledge and skills learned. Emphasis is placed on human anatomy and physiology and the fundamentals of health related careers. Students will be instructed on theory with practical applications as allowed. Prerequisite: Biology (May be concurrent) 
Advanced Sports Medicine This course will focus more on practical applications of the knowledge gained in MED0262 with supplemental lectures. This course requires participation after school and/or on weekends as necessary. Prerequisite: Sports Medicine A/B
Lab Assistant Live job shadow with local health care professionals in various fields including: PT, AT, Personal Trainer and others as available. Students will apply knowledge gained from Sports Medicine and Advanced Sports Medicine in hands-on activities when working with AT on campus.  Students will gain workplace knowledge and experience in real world health careers. 
Industry Certifications OHSA 10 - Healthcare
